Low Back Pain is a symptom of an underlying problem:

  • Sprain/Strain – This refers to pulling of the muscles or ligaments in the low back causing inflammation and pain, symptoms being mild to severe. Treatment is directed at reducing inflammation and muscle spasm and allowing healing to take place.
  • Spinal Degeneration – This is discussed elsewhere, but pain comes from muscle spasm,  subluxation, joint inflammation and nerve compression. In milder cases therapy is directed at correcting subluxations, and reducing muscle spasm and inflammation. In more sever cases, disc rehabilitation through non-surgical spinal decompression or flexion traction is necessary.
  • Facet Syndrome (also called Facet Arthropathy or Facet Imbrication) – This refers to the jamming of the posterior facets of the spinal column causing inflammation, pain and ultimately degeneration. Loss of disc height often leads to facet compression so therapy is usually directed at disc rehabilitation, but posture often needs to be addressed.
  • Abdominal Infection – There are numerous reflexes from the intestinal tract to the low back musculature. Infection, such as food poisoning, frequently causes inflammation and muscle spasm in the low back. In addition, bacteria often secrete toxins which can inflame nerves causing pain. To treat this condition, the nature of the infection needs to be determined. If it is bacterial, probiotics is usually the most effective treatment. Other types of infection each have their solution, usually with herbs. Severe cases will need medical referral.
  • Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts – Again these problems occupy space and put pressure on organs causing reflex spasm in the low back. If these problems become severe they require medical referral and sometimes surgery.
  • Sacroiliac Inflammation – This is almost always caused by disturbances in the lower abdomen such as infection or fibroids, but sometimes by lumbar disc protrusions. The cause needs to be determined and addressed.
  • Arthritis – Sometimes true inflammatory arthritis of the spine or pelvis can cause low back pain. The theory of rheumatic disease I find most attractive is that of Thomas McPearson Brown, M.D., who believes it is a joint infection. Current medical treatments are usually directed at autoimmunity, and are not particularly effective.
